Bartleby Manifesto

Bartleby.dev exists because we believe that the future of enterprise software is custom: a single pane of glass solution uniquely built for your business.

Today, companies spend a significant portion of their budgets on customizing out-of-the-box software into mediocre systems. Employees drown in disparate solutions that require constant context switching in order to get work done. It’s astounding to us that there’s a rapidly growing $18B market for customizing Salesforce, and that companies continue to waste time and money manipulating rigid legacy solutions. At Bartleby, we are firm believers that the next generation of software should not look anything like the way it does today.

“See, the world is full of things more powerful than us. But if you know how to catch a ride, you can go places.”

– Neal Stephenson, Snow Crash

We are beginning to see the green shoots of a new movement. Large Language Models and Generative AI are unlocking the ability to build software at a lower cost and higher velocity than ever before. Leveraging new advances in AI infrastructure, a few first movers are beginning to replace enterprise application vendors with their own systems at a fraction of the cost. And yet, leveraging this new technology to reimagine and streamline internal processes is not straightforward, nor is it a core concern for most businesses. It shouldn’t have to be. That’s why we started Bartleby: to be the outsourced solution to your company’s custom internal tooling.

Substantial aspects of what used to be managed under IT have already been outsourced. Infrastructure is now predominantly in the public cloud; cybersecurity specialists are best suited to monitor and adapt to new threat vectors; MSPs manage tickets and devices more efficiently than wasting internal resources to do the same. And yet when it comes to software, companies seem to be stuck in the classic innovator’s dilemma: doubling down on sustaining improvements by renting an exhaustive suite of apps, instead of pursuing disruptive innovation with a bespoke solution.

We have conviction that single pane of glass solutions are the future. We don’t use external application vendors and have built our own in-house CRM and custom workflows to run our business. How are we doing this? We’re experts in Knowledge Graphs and believers in their ability to replicate human knowledge to drive agentic workflows. This type of semantic systems engineering allows us to accurately model the entire consulting workflow, providing context and feedback through our model intelligence layer to power our GenAI tooling. While AI agent vendors, requiring your data in order to work, are at odds with their customers, Bartleby’s incentives are aligned with your organization’s.

When you work with us, you’ll get to see how we run our business by interfacing with our client portal for real-time updates and project delivery. And we partner with the best infrastructure providers in the business so that you can too. While we are incredibly excited by the frontiers of what agents can do together, we maintain the key human aspects of our work, enhancing our team’s unique business value with automation, not destroying it.

“Imagine my surprise, nay, my consternation, when without moving from his privacy, Bartleby, in a singular mild, firm voice, replied, ‘I would prefer not to.’”

– Herman Melville, Bartleby the Scrivener

We see the story of Bartleby as an outcry against corporate bureaucracy, and here’s our call to you: free your employees with better tooling, don’t let them languish in the mundane.
